Jawun endorses Uluru Statement – Feb 2019
In mid-2017, the Uluru Statement from the Heart was released by the government appointed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Referendum Council. Shortly after, Jawun proudly issued a statement of support, endorsing recommendations for substantive recognition and Australia’s First Peoples having a legitimate voice in the affairs of this nation.
Now, as then, Jawun stands behind the Uluru Statement and the Indigenous leaders and people it represents. We also urge our partners, a true cross-section of Australian industry, to join us in backing this unique opportunity for Indigenous empowerment and the rightful recognition of our First Peoples.
Jawun is deeply proud of its partners’ commitment to Indigenous Australia. Three thousand employees have now lived and worked in Indigenous communities as part of Jawun secondments, and over nine hundred executives have travelled to understand Indigenous reform and leadership firsthand on Executive Visits. Now we look to them to stand with Indigenous Australia and its champions, by supporting the Uluru Statement’s recommendations for voice, agreement-making, and truth-telling.
We commend BHP and Rio Tinto for their call to action to listen and act on this request from Indigenous people to be truly recognised. We praise their stance in responding clearly and directly to what Andrew Mackenzie, CEO BHP, describes as an invitation and a gift. And we hope this leadership, from some of the world’s largest resource companies, will act as inspiration to others.
As the remarkable Statement itself offers, “We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future”. Join us to make that vision real.
